Nicole Barwise is a Grade 9 Pupil from Menlopark Hoerskool builds a battery in the toilet sewage system that can generate a low potential electric current. The apparatus can function as a urine powered battery to generate low potential electrical current for rural use, where access to electricity provided by the Eskom grid is not available. She received two Gold Awards from the Northern Gauteng Senior Expo for Young Scientists 2015 and also Eskom International Science Fair 2015. Nicole Barwise, aged 16, received half of R300 000 from the African Energy Awards, awarded for the innovation prize for her urine-powered battery system and an Eternity power thermal harvesting project.
